Symbol Match is a rapid comparison game, but the useful habit is orderly inspection rather than frantic clicking. Each reference is built from four kinds of information: its frame, centre mark, arm directions and the marks at the ends of those arms.

How to play Symbol Match

A reference symbol appears beside a small group of options. One option is identical in every detail and in the same orientation. Select it before the question timer reaches zero. A missed timer records an incorrect answer and briefly reveals the exact match.

Rotation is not allowed. A symbol with every arm turned one step clockwise is not an exact match, even if its internal pattern feels familiar. Reflections are also different because they reverse the order of features around the centre.

Use the same four-pass scan

Frame → centre → arm directions → terminal marks. A fixed order keeps one convincing feature from hiding a small mismatch elsewhere.

A worked comparison

Imagine a diamond frame with a ring centre. It has one upward arm ending in a dot, one right arm ending in a bar and one lower-left arm ending in a fork. An option with the same three directions but a dot on the right arm is wrong. So is an option that moves the lower-left fork to the lower-right, even when every other feature matches.

The safest choice is the one that survives all four checks. You do not need to name the complete symbol while playing, but a short internal phrase such as “diamond, ring, up-dot, right-bar, lower-left-fork” can prevent a near-match from slipping through.

Difficulty changes the comparison load

Symbol Match difficulty comparison
LevelRoundsChoicesArmsTime each
Easy8326.5 seconds
Standard10435 seconds
Hard12544.5 seconds

Easy distractors usually change two features, giving you room to learn the grammar. Standard mixes broader changes with close one-feature misses. Hard uses five dense options whose distractors can differ by a single arm, terminal, frame or centre feature.

How the Symbol Match score works

Accuracy supplies 84% of the base score and useful pace supplies 16%. Pace is measured against a target response time for the selected difficulty, then suppressed at the chance level for that option count: one in three on Easy, one in four on Standard and one in five on Hard.

This means fast random choices cannot build a strong result. A small difficulty adjustment of 0.96 for Easy, 1.00 for Standard or 1.04 for Hard is applied before the score is rounded and capped between 0 and 100. The result also reports your average response and longest correct streak, but streak does not add hidden points.

How fresh symbols are generated and checked

Every symbol comes from a seeded procedural grammar. The generator chooses a circle, diamond or hexagon frame; a dot, ring or cross centre; unique positions around eight possible arm directions; and dot, bar or fork terminals. The same seed and difficulty reproduce the same complete round.

Generation is not accepted on trust. The validator builds transformation keys for eight rotations and eight reflected rotations. It rejects symmetric references, duplicate options, repeated references, and any distractor that can become the reference through rotation or reflection. Only one option may share the reference’s exact structural key.

Keyboard, touch and non-visual descriptions

Every option is a native button with a touch target comfortably larger than 44 CSS pixels. Press the displayed number for a direct choice, or move among options with Tab or the arrow keys and activate one with Enter or Space.

The SVG artwork also receives a text description naming its frame, centre and each arm by direction and terminal. That exposes the information needed for comparison without relying on colour. The short time limit remains a genuine accessibility constraint, so the game can be paused and automatically stops when the page is hidden, but there is not yet an untimed comparable-score mode.

Symbol Match in the Daily Brain Workout

Symbol Match can appear when Speed is one of today’s five selected skills. The Daily station uses Standard difficulty: ten comparisons, four choices each and five seconds per match. Its score contributes equally alongside the other four stations.

Symbol Match questions

Can a rotated symbol be the correct answer?

No. Symbol Match asks for an exact visual twin in the same orientation. The generator also keeps rotated and reflected equivalents out of the distractor set.

How many choices appear?

Easy shows three choices, Standard shows four and Hard shows five. The number of arms and the time limit also change with difficulty.

Can I play Symbol Match with a keyboard?

Yes. Use Tab or the arrow keys to move between choices, Enter or Space to activate a focused button, or press the number shown on an option.

Is Symbol Match in the Daily Brain Workout?

Yes. Symbol Match can appear as the Speed station. Each Daily Brain Workout selects five of the site’s eight skills and uses Standard difficulty.
