A block-counting puzzle shows a solid arrangement of identical cubes from one fixed viewpoint. The drawing never shows every cube: some sit behind taller columns, and some exist only because the cube above them needs support.

How to play Block Count

Each round draws one stack of cubes on a flat 3×3 or 4×4 base. Cubes never float: every cube either rests on the ground or sits directly on another cube, so each occupied position is a complete solid column. Your task is to select the exact total number of cubes from the answer options before the round timer expires.

Every column shows a clearly visible top, so each column’s height can be read from the drawing, and hidden cubes are hidden in a way the visible cubes force: a cube two levels up guarantees the two cubes beneath it. Some drawings do contain occluded pockets where an extra cube might sit unseen — isometric pictures cannot avoid that. Those stacks stay fair through the answers: the correct total is always the cubes that must exist, and no other total the drawing could conceivably make ever appears among the options.

Seen plus unseen

The correct total is the visible cubes plus the hidden supports. One of the wrong options is often the visible count alone — the classic block-counting mistake.

A reliable counting method

  1. Count columns, not cubes. Each occupied grid position is one solid column. Find the height of each column and add the heights together.
  2. Work front to back. The front columns are fully visible. Behind them, look for exposed tops: every column shows its top face, which tells you exactly how tall it is.
  3. Add supports automatically. A top face three levels up means three cubes, whether or not the two lower cubes can be seen.
  4. Group in rows. On the wider Hard base, total one row of columns at a time, then add the row totals.
  5. Sanity-check against the visible count. If your total equals what you can literally see and the stack has any raised, partly buried cubes, you have probably missed the hidden supports.
  6. Trust the minimum when a corner is hidden. If an occluded pocket could hold an extra cube, count only the cubes the drawing forces to exist. The options never include any other total the picture could make, so the honest minimum is always the answer on offer.

What the difficulty levels change

Easy uses five stacks on a 3×3 base with columns at most two cubes tall, so hidden cubes are rare and the totals stay small. Standard uses six stacks on the same base with columns up to three cubes tall, and every Standard stack contains at least one hidden cube.

Hard moves to a 4×4 base with columns up to four cubes tall, guarantees at least two hidden cubes per stack, and adds a fifth answer option. The counting itself is the same skill; there is simply more structure to track and less room for estimation.

How the Block Count score works

Exact counts provide 88% of the base score and answer pace supplies the remaining 12%. The pace contribution is gated by accuracy and collapses at the random-choice baseline — 25% for four options or 20% for five — so rapid guessing earns no useful speed credit.

Your result also reports how many wrong answers matched the visible-cube count exactly. That is diagnostic feedback about the most common counting mistake, not an extra penalty. Records for each difficulty stay separate and receive the same small adjustment used across Puzzle Workout.

How every stack is validated

Each stack is generated as a height map: a grid of column heights built from the round’s seed. The exact total is the sum of those heights — it is calculated from the model, never from the picture. A separate visibility check then simulates the fixed isometric viewpoint, casting a ray from each cube face towards the viewer to decide precisely which cubes and faces can be seen.

The generator first requires at least half of every column’s top face to be drawn, so heights are readable. It then runs an exhaustive search over every other physically possible arrangement — including isometric depth tricks, where near and far geometry can draw almost identical shapes — and collects every total whose picture would differ from the real one by less than a full cube face, because a smaller sliver is not something a player can fairly be asked to spot. The real stack must be the minimum of those totals, so counting the cubes that must exist is always correct. Finally, the answer options are filtered against that list: every wrong option is a total the drawing cannot make, the options are distinct and sorted, and the exact total appears exactly once.

Common Block Count mistakes

Counting only what is drawn

The visible faces are a floor for the answer, never the answer itself once anything is raised or buried. Add the support cubes each elevated top face implies.

Double-counting shared corners

Where three faces of one cube meet, it is easy to read one cube as two. Counting column heights instead of individual drawn faces avoids this entirely.

Losing your place on the wider base

On 4×4 stacks, an unsystematic scan tends to skip a middle column. Fix a scanning order — left to right, front to back — and keep it for every stack.

Block Count questions

Can the answer ever be ambiguous?

No. Some drawings contain occluded pockets that could hide an extra cube, but the game computes every total the picture could conceivably represent and keeps all of them out of the answer options except the true one. If you suspect a hidden corner, count the cubes that must exist: that total is always the one offered, and every other option is provably impossible.

Do hidden cubes really have to be there?

Yes. Cubes never float in this game. Every cube stands on the ground or on another cube, so anything visible at height three sits on exactly two supporting cubes, whether you can see them or not.

Can I use a keyboard?

Yes. Press the option position number — 1–4 on Easy and Standard, 1–5 on Hard — or move between options with the arrow keys and press Enter or Space.

Is Block Count in the Daily Brain Workout?

Not yet. It is a new standalone Spatial game while its Daily fit is evaluated. Shape Rotation and Cube Net currently share the Daily Spatial station.
