Grid Recall is a short pattern-memory game with a very simple question: after seeing a group of marked squares for a few seconds, can you put every one back in the right place?

How Grid Recall works

Each round begins with a blank grid whose target squares are briefly highlighted. The highlights then disappear and the same grid becomes interactive. Select exactly as many squares as the original pattern contained, then lock in your answer.

The game checks three things separately: the target squares you found, any target squares you missed, and any unmarked squares you selected by mistake. After a short reveal, the next round begins with either a larger grid, more targets, less study time, or a combination of all three.

The pattern changes every time

Grid Recall uses a seeded generator. Today’s seed always creates the same fair sequence, while a new practice attempt produces a fresh set of positions.

Why the later grids feel much harder

Adding one target square sounds like a small change, but it creates two demands at once. There is one more position to remember, and there are more opportunities to confuse that position with a nearby empty square. Moving from a 4×4 grid to a 5×5 grid also removes some of the helpful simplicity of corners and edges: more targets can sit in the visually similar centre area.

The Standard workout starts with four targets on a 4×4 grid. By its final round, you are holding eight positions on a 5×5 grid and seeing them for less time. Hard mode eventually reaches an 11-target 6×6 grid. The increase is deliberate rather than random, so an unexpectedly difficult first round cannot spoil the whole exercise.

A reliable way to remember the pattern

Trying to memorise eight isolated squares one at a time is slow. It is usually easier to turn the grid into a small structure:

  1. Anchor the corners and edges first. Notice targets touching the outside of the grid. They give the rest of the pattern a stable frame.
  2. Look for small shapes. Two adjacent squares can become a pair; three might form a line, an L, or a step. Remembering a shape uses fewer separate labels.
  3. Trace one route. Move your eyes through the pattern in a consistent direction—top to bottom or clockwise—rather than jumping between targets.
  4. Rebuild the anchors before the centre. When the empty grid appears, place the positions you know with confidence. Use those to locate the remaining squares.

There is no need to name every row and column. A description such as “top-right pair, diagonal step, bottom-left corner” is often more manageable than a list of eight coordinates.

How the Grid Recall score is calculated

Accuracy supplies 85% of the base score and speed supplies 15%. Correct targets raise the accuracy score; missed targets and incorrect selections lower it. The speed component only becomes useful when recall is better than chance, so quickly clicking random squares cannot produce a strong score.

Difficulty is included when the score is normalised. Easy mode receives a small adjustment because its grids and target counts are lower, while Hard mode receives a small allowance for its larger patterns. The score is a personal workout result for entertainment and progress tracking—not an intelligence score or medical assessment.

Common mistakes

Remembering the overall shape but not its position

A diagonal of three squares can be reproduced perfectly but shifted one column to the side. Include at least one positional anchor—such as “touching the left edge”—when you name a shape.

Filling the centre first

Central squares have fewer distinctive landmarks. Placing clear corner and edge targets first makes the central positions easier to judge relative to them.

Rushing to protect the speed score

Speed has deliberately been given much less weight than accuracy. One wrong square generally costs more than a thoughtful extra second, so check the completed pattern before locking it in.

Grid Recall questions

Does the puzzle repeat?

The number of possible patterns is extremely large. A specific seed reproduces the same workout for fairness, but practice attempts use a new namespaced seed and produce fresh positions.

Can I play without a mouse?

Yes. Tab into the grid, use the arrow keys to move between squares, and press Space or Enter to select or deselect a square. Every grid cell also has a row-and-column label for assistive technology.

What happens if I switch tabs?

The active timer pauses when the page becomes hidden. Returning to the page shows a pause screen and requires you to resume explicitly, so the pattern cannot disappear unnoticed in the background.

Which difficulty appears in the Daily Brain Workout?

The initial Daily Brain Workout uses Standard difficulty. Standalone practice lets you choose Easy or Hard as well.
