Pattern Sequence is a visual logic game in which every row follows a deliberate rule. Your job is to identify what changes, what stays fixed, and which option continues the complete pattern.
How Pattern Sequence works
Each question shows five visual tokens followed by a missing sixth step. A token can vary in four ways: outside shape, internal mark, number of repeated symbols and—in the case of arrows—direction. The answer choices are built from plausible changes to those same features.
Choose one option before the timer expires. The game immediately shows the intended rule and explains how it operates, whether your answer was right or wrong. Standard mode uses six different rule families in one workout, so the next question cannot be solved simply by repeating the previous method.
The symbols and parameters are generated from a seed, but the underlying logic comes from a named rule family. Questions are then validated for four distinct options and one intended continuation.
The rules used in the game
The easiest sequences usually change one feature. Shapes may alternate A–B–A–B, three shapes may repeat in a cycle, internal marks may cycle while the outside stays fixed, or an arrow may turn 90 degrees each step.
Other questions organise tokens into repeated pairs or cycle the number of symbols from one to three. More demanding sequences run two rules at once: shapes might repeat every three steps while marks alternate every two, or shape and mark cycles may move in different directions. Hard mode also combines a three-shape cycle with quantities that grow after every pair.
A dependable way to solve visual sequences
- List the available features. Check shape, internal mark, quantity and direction separately. Do not assume the most obvious feature is the only one changing.
- Test the shortest repeat first. Look for alternation, repeated pairs and three-step cycles before inventing a complicated numerical story.
- Write two mental rows. If both shape and mark change, follow the shapes alone, then the marks alone. Two simple cycles are easier to see when separated.
- Predict before reading the options. Decide what the next token should contain, then use the choices as a check. Starting from the options can tempt you into justifying a near-match.
When a sequence feels inconsistent, compare positions separated by two or three steps. A mark that looks irregular from left to right may be alternating cleanly, while the shape follows a separate three-step cycle.
Can a sequence have more than one possible rule?
Any short list can be forced to fit an elaborate mathematical rule. Fair visual-sequence puzzles rely on a different convention: prefer the simplest rule that explains every displayed step and uses the visual features consistently. Puzzle Workout generates from a declared rule family and chooses distractors that break that rule.
The feedback names the intended family rather than merely marking an option. That makes a wrong answer useful: you can see whether you overlooked a second cycle, treated a pair as an alternation, or followed only one visual attribute.
How the Pattern Sequence score is calculated
Correct answers supply 88% of the base score and response speed supplies 12%. Unanswered and incorrect questions count as errors. The speed component is suppressed at chance-level accuracy, so choosing options rapidly without identifying the rules cannot produce a strong result.
Difficulty levels are stored separately. Hard questions use more combined rules and receive slightly more time, so an Easy score is never compared directly with a Hard score. The result is for entertainment and personal progress, not intelligence or medical assessment.

Following only the outside shape
A shape cycle may be correct but incomplete because the internal marks follow a second rhythm. Confirm every changing feature before choosing.
Assuming every change happens each step
Repeated-pair rules hold a feature for two positions before advancing. Compare the grouping as well as the individual tokens.
Letting the answer choices define the rule
Three distractors are deliberately plausible mutations of the correct continuation. Forming a prediction first makes it harder for those near-matches to redirect your reasoning.

Are the questions unlimited?
The rule library is finite and authored, while shapes, marks, directions, quantities, rule order and answer positions are generated from a seed. This produces a very large number of meaningful variations without relying on arbitrary randomness.
Will the game explain a wrong answer?
Yes. Every question reveals the rule name and a specific explanation before the next sequence begins.
Can I answer using the keyboard?
