This Word Ladder is a chain of short vocabulary decisions. You begin with one four-letter word. A clue defines the next word, and that answer must differ from the current word in exactly one position. The answer then becomes the starting point for the following clue.
How this Word Ladder works
Each step offers four choices. All four are familiar words from the game’s reviewed word bank, and all four change exactly one letter of the current word. That prevents the letter rule from giving the answer away: you must use the clue as well as the spelling pattern.
After a choice, the correct move is shown and the route continues from that word. A mistake therefore lowers the score without breaking the rest of the ladder. Standard mode contains six connected steps, while Easy uses five and Hard uses seven.
The reviewed bank currently contains 413 words joined by 1,240 valid one-letter links. A seeded route builder recombines those links into many ladders and option sets. The supply is large, but deliberately finite.
Why the clues matter
A traditional start-to-finish ladder can have more than one legitimate shortest route. That is enjoyable on paper, but it is awkward for a timed automatic game: a valid word can lead somewhere the generator did not predict. Here, each clue defines the intended next word. Alternative neighbours remain useful distractors, but a player is never marked wrong merely for finding a different dictionary route.
The clue also shifts the challenge from visual pattern matching into language. You are retrieving a meaning, holding the current spelling in mind and testing which single substitution satisfies both constraints.
What changes between difficulty levels?
| Level | Steps | Time per clue | Score adjustment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Easy | 5 | 15 seconds | 0.96 |
| Standard | 6 | 13 seconds | 1.00 |
| Hard | 7 | 11 seconds | 1.04 |
The vocabulary bank remains the same across levels. Hard is harder because the route is longer and the decision window is shorter, not because it introduces obscure words. Results are stored separately by difficulty so personal bests remain like-for-like.
A dependable way to solve each step
- Read the clue before the choices. Form a rough answer in your head first. Scanning four similar spellings too early can pull attention towards a legal move that does not fit the meaning.
- Compare positions, not loose letter sets. A valid move replaces one letter in place. Rearranging the same letters is an anagram, not a ladder step.
- Check the unchanged three. Once a word seems to fit the clue, compare it with the current word from left to right. Three positions must match exactly.
- Use elimination carefully. If two choices are close in meaning, ask which one answers the wording precisely. Every option already passes the spelling rule.
How the Word Ladder score is calculated
Accuracy supplies 84% of the score and pace supplies 16%. A timeout counts as an incorrect answer. Because each step has four choices, pace is progressively suppressed when accuracy is close to the 25% expected from random selection. Fast guessing therefore cannot create a useful speed score.
The displayed best streak counts consecutive correct clues for feedback only; it does not add a hidden bonus. Your Workout Score is a recreational game result for comparing your own attempts. It is not an intelligence, vocabulary-age, educational or medical assessment.
How fresh ladders are generated safely
The game does not pull unchecked entries from a general browser dictionary. Every available word has an editor-written clue. At build time, the generator compares the words and creates a link only when two differ in exactly one position. For a new round, a seeded search walks through that graph without repeating a word and chooses three other neighbours as distractors at every step.
The completed puzzle is then validated again: route order, clue ownership, answer index, option uniqueness and every one-letter link must all be exact. The same seed and difficulty reproduce the same route, while a new practice seed changes the route and answer order.
Word Ladder questions
Are the Word Ladders unlimited?
No literal infinity is promised. The game recombines a finite reviewed bank of 413 words and 1,240 links into a large supply of validated routes. We prefer that honest limit to using obscure or questionable dictionary entries merely to inflate the count.
Can more than one option change one letter?
Yes—every option does. The clue makes one of those valid spelling moves the correct language answer.
Can I use the keyboard?
Yes. Press 1, 2, 3 or 4 for an answer. Arrow keys move between answer buttons, and the pause and difficulty controls follow the normal keyboard route.
What happens if I leave the tab?
The timer pauses automatically when the page is hidden and waits for you to resume. Paused time is excluded from active play time.
Can Word Ladder appear in the Daily Brain Workout?
Yes. Language is one of eight rotating skills. Five distinct skills are selected for each local date, and Word Ladder uses Standard clues whenever Language appears.
